The Actors’ Mission of Sweetwater County has been awarded a grant of $13,000 from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund. The WCTF board is named by the Governor designed to support Wyoming’s culture and heritage through grant funding of innovative projects. The WCTF Board met in Torrington November 9-10, 2016, and voted to grant the Actors’ Mission money to assist in their plans to complete Phase I of their building renovation project for a their new theatre in downtown Rock Springs.
Actors’ Mission is a non-profit community theatre group that has included over 300 actors, designers, directors and set crews since its inception over 14 years ago. The group has been performing in various venues throughout the city, and most recently in the Elks Building. In keeping with their mission statement, “Feed the Body – Nourish the Mind”, their performances are free to the public and include a free meal. Their funding is provided local donors and a grant from BOCES.
In July 2016, Actors’ Mission was the recipient of a donation of a building. The building is located on South Main Street, across from the train depot. The Rock Springs URA granted the group money to improve the façade of the building, which is nearing completion.
The building project is being funded by the generous donations from Actors’ Mission supporters, local businesses and industries, and cultural arts grants.
Brad Russell and others met with the Board on November 9th and 10th, and explained that the building project will be performed in three phases. Plans for the first phase include a new roof, making the building sound for its intended use, and getting it ready for the build-out of a black box theatre, with seating for an audience of about 90 people. Russell said, “The Board complimented us on the preparation of the grant, and were pleased with the wonderful letters of support from the city and community.” There has been a preliminary meeting with the City Planner, and architectural plans are currently being completed by Plan One Architects.
The Actors’ Mission would like to invite everyone to enjoy a cup of chili provided by Wendy’s and some hot cider with us on December 3rd, between 11 AM and 7 PM, while waiting for the Christmas Parade. Donations will be welcomed!
